Summary

Excavations at the Old City Club site behind the National Westminster Bank in 1971 recorded a number of archaeological finds and features. Three medieval pits and a brick lined medieval/post medieval well were discovered. These all contained pottery sherds with some of the fragments identified as Saxon Thetford Ware, post medieval salt-glazed stoneware base and medieval Grimston Ware.

1971. Old City Club site behind National Westminster Bank (extension).
Much Thetford Ware from disturbed surface layer.
Well in centre of site. Brick lined two thirds down, 1.5m (5ft) diameter.
Pit A - under Bank. Photographs of section taken. Burnt clay.
Pit B - cess pit.
Pit C - salt glazed stoneware base.
Some Grimston Ware - 17th century clay pipes - piece of Delft.
Soil sample taken by A.C. from right hand side. Opposite bank.
