Full Description
1969. Context 1.
Sherds, animal bones and human bones found during excavations for temporary canteen. Sherds are 12th-13th century unglazed and post medieval material include piece of Delft.
Possibly from churchyard of St Cross. 1551 demolished.
Finds held by NCM.
1971. Context 2
Medieval and post medieval sherds from trench across yard. Mainly 17th century.
Some Thetford Ware.
Finds held by NCM.

July-August 1993. Excavation.
Excavation within shored trench in advance of installation of tank at rear of Russell House.
Pottery of mainly medieval and post medieval date was recorded, although one sherd of prehistoric and one of Middle Saxon also found.
2 worked bone small finds.
Iron and copper alloy barrel padlock.
Several iron nails.
A series of pits were excavated, and one probable natural solution hollow.

Report (S3) shows that though large quantities of Thetford type ware were recovered from the pits, it is believed to be of post Conquest date with no pre-Conquest Late Saxon activity on site.
The prehistoric sherd has been identified as Iron Age. Evidence of medieval butchering on site.
