Summary

Traces of a possible road and a piece of medieval pottery were noted during trench-digging work in 1963.

1963. Outside number 24 Tombland, Erpingham House.
New sewer pipe trench running east to west. At the west end was (?natural) sandy gravel at about 45cm (1 foot 6 inches), with considerable modern pipe disturbance at about 76cm (2 feet 6 inches).
To the east there was a steep slope of about 1.5m (5 feet) deep for natural along the rest of the length of the trench.
At 76cm (2 feet 6 inches) along the east end was a horizontal layer of dirty gravel overlying dark unstratified soil to the bottom of the cutting.
Above this were the remains of other gravel surfaces.
12th century rim sherd from spoil heap.
