NHER 190 (Building record) - 2 to 4 St Miles Alley/23 Rosemary Lane

1972. Stray Find.
Clearance of topsoil at rear of properties and the excavation of shallow foundations for the additions at the rear of 2 to 4 St Miles Alley.
16th to 17th century German stoneware.
The area seemed to have been subjected to continuous pit digging over the whole of the back garden from 15th to 20th centuries.

"17th Century. 1883 on plaque above No. 4. Extensive 20th-century restoration. Brick ground floor to No. 2 and rendered timber-frame at first floor. Nos. 3 and 4 rendered. Pantile roof. Two storeys, jettied at No. 2 with gable end to street. Six first-floor windows."

Building examined as part of Norwich Survey.
Two storey timber-framed building with jettied first floor and end gable attic on street. Extensive modern restoration.
Barrel vault beneath side lane, partially below extension to St Mary's church.

This building is amongst those listed in thesis (S3), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as formerly three separate properties, each two storeys high plus attic. They were severerly modernised and converted to flats with little regard for the original interiors but the dating evidence that survived pointed to a 17th-century origin.
