Full Description
Midland Bank.
Material from several holes and miscellaneous.
1973.
Pit 2: ?Roman jug rim, two medieval sherds.
Pit 3: loamy fill with bones and shell. Late Saxon sherd, medieval, salt glazed stoneware, ?Sieburg rim, bronze thimble, one Wanfreid rim sherd.
One Rouen jug rim, one complete 'gin' bottle, Sainsbury's potted meat jars.
W. Milligan (NCM).
June-July 2002. NAU evaluation, two trenches. Contexts 100-254 used.
The trench closest to the street frontage contained a well preserved 16th century undercroft-like cellar and no other significant features or finds.
The other trench yielded one heavily truncated 11th-12th century pit. Quarrying and terracing in the 13th-14th centuries largely destroyed any earlier remains. A mass of 16th century and later post medieval rubbish pits were excavated. The concrete foundations of a 'temporary' bank in use in the 1980s had caused damage to the site's archaeological remains.

July 2003. NAU evaluation.
The surviving extent of the 16th century vault or undercroft and cellar was located and planned. In addition, further cellars and structures were recorded, including one of potential 17th century date, and a possible chimney stack of 16th-17th century date.
Other structures of apparent post 18th century date were also revealed and recorded by the evaluation.
