Summary

Fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a scatter of medieval and Roman pottery fragments and prehistoric worked flints. A concentration of Neolithic worked flints and a scatter of Iron Age pottery, perhaps from an in filled pit and therefore redeposited, were also recorded. A concentration of Roman pottery fragments and some discoloured soil were also noted. This concentration is indicaitive of Roman settlement.

Map

Fenland fieldwalking.
Good, weathered ploughsoil.

Context 1. MTW FT.
General scatter of sherds medieval and Roman and flint across field, partly Methwold, partly Feltwell.

Context 2 centred at 7020 9400.
Part of Neolithic flint scatter extending from NHER 4848 context 2 which see for details.

Context 3 at 7026 9406. MTW FW.
Small scatter of pot, possibly medieval, mixed up with much modern material in northeast corner of field. An infilled pit, so redeposited? or a genuine site - remains uncertain. About 24m northeast by southwest by 13m northwest by southeast.
Sherds in fact are Iron Age.

Context 4 at 7013 9392. MTW 154.
Concentration of Roman pot, sparse to moderate with slight discolouration of chalky loam soil, on gentle slope to northwest. Further to west and southwest in Feltwell, but in same field, other small group of Roman pot classed as 154b and 154c for record purposes suggest a more extensive site, although no soil staining here. 44m east to west by 25m north to south.
R. Silvester (NAU), 22 March l988.

Some of the material from Context 3 has been reidentified as Iron Age pottery.
