Summary

In 1988 a dispersed hoard of Middle Bronze Age finds, including a gold torc and looped palstave, were recovered as stray finds from an area recently stripped for work on a nearby road scheme. Archaeological excavations between 1988 and 1989 recovered a diverse range of artefacts from an area of pits, linear features and a possible hearth. Finds included a Neolithic flints and Early Bronze Age and Roman pottery sherds.

Roman Bronze headstud brooch with hinged pin and transverse ribbing on bow. 2nd century.

19 June 1988. Surface find on area stripped for pit. Context 2.
Middle Bronze Age gold torc, bronze spearhead, palstave and ring, all found in close proximity, represent a dispersed hoard.

19 June 1988. Context 3. In borrow pit.
Two small pits containing dark soil; southern pit had been investigated by unknown persons but still produced two joining rim sherds of a mid 1st century AD bowl. Finder [3].

November 1989. Contexts 4-12. Seen fleetingly during grading.
Eight small pits with dark fillings (contexts 4 to 11).
One hearth (context 12) or pit with dark soil on road line.
Two linear features, one square shaped, one hook shaped.
