NHER 24900 (Monument record) - Mesolithic/Neolithic worked flints and Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon and Late Saxon to post-medieval pottery sherds

October 1988. Fieldwalking.
Fieldwalking by [1]. Field walked in 30m transects (split into North Area and South Area) with a strip at the north-western edge of the field walked closely (Squares 1-3). The only real concentration lay to the east of the church where Early Saxon and Late Saxon pottery was found. On the rest of the field finds were scarce.

Finds from Sqaures 1-3 (Contexts 1-3):
4 Iron Age/Early Saxon pottery sherds (1 hard grey gritty and 3 dark grey handmade).
28 Roman pottery sherds (26 greyware and 2 coarse).
1 ?Roman pottery sherd (indet. grey).
1 Roman/Late Saxon pottery sherd (greyware/Thetford type).
2 Early Saxon pottery sherds (organic temper).
9 Late Saxon pottery sherds (Thetford type).
1 ?Late Saxon pottery sherd (?Thetford type).
4 medieval pottery sherds (1 early medieval, 3 unglazed)
5 post-medieval pottery sherds (2 Glazed Red Earthenware, 1 unglazed oxidised and 2 stoneware)

Found in North Area (Context 4):
2 Iron Age pottery sherds (gritty).
1 Roman pottery sherd (coarse).
3 Late Saxon pottery sherds (Thetford type).
9 medieval pottery sherds (unglazed).
2 post-medieval pottery sherds (1 stoneware and 1 flowerpot).

Found in South Area (Context 5):
3 prehistoric worked flints.
1 Iron Age pottery sherd (gritty).
3 Roman pottery sherds (2 greyware and 1 coarse).
11 medieval pottery sherds (unglazed).
1 undatable pottery sherd.

Finds identified by A. Rogerson (NAU), 6 November 1988, see list and finder's notes and sketch map in file. Finds subsequently donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1998.163.4), where the flints were identified as Mesolithic/Neolithic.
