Full Description
Concentration of Roman pottery set in dark soil.
Pot (moderate), fired clay (abundant), tile (?x1), bone (x1). Conditions reasonable - newly drilled cereal, some weathering. Dimensions about 59m southwest/northeast x 48m northwest/southeast.
R. Silvester (NAU) 8 December 1988.
For full details of wares, flint types etc see (S1).
(S2) records this as the site of a Roman settlement dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries, one of a number of similar sites identified along the course of the Fen Causeway Roman road (NHER 2796). (S2) also records briquetage from this site, suggesting that salt-production was taking place at this site during the Roman period.
See (S2) for more details.
S. Spooner (NLA) 2 August 2006
