Apparent ancient disturbance of the northwest part of the fen led to investigation of the site.
Lumps of tufa were picked up.
Local people in the village told [1] that peat digging had taken place there.
Information confirmed by (S1) suggesting still going in 19th to 20th century.
[1] suggested tufa might have been deposited from Gaywood river and might have been used by villagers to lime soil. (S1) states he was informed that treetrunks were often found when peat digging in Leziate Fen.
