Summary

Prehistoric flints, Iron Age pottery, Roman brooches, pottery and coins, and fragments of pottery dating from the Middle Saxon to the post medieval periods found during metal detecting and fieldwalking. The discovery of a disturbed Roman coin hoard in 1994 prompted a small excavation that revealed a late medieval ditch.

1989. Three metal detecting finds. Context 1 centred [1].
Roman coin, CAESARVM NOSTRORVM VOT X mintmark TLON London 323-4.
Aesica brooch fragment. Closed type with openwork bow; backplate integral with wings; spring, pin and lower half missing. AD 40-60. Photograph NAU.
T-shaped brooch; hinged pin (missing) held by axis bar (extant) in tubular wings. Knurled and moulded wings. Moulded bow. Part catchplate missing. Mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD.

September 1994. Excavation.
Disturbed hoard of Roman copper alloy coins discovered. Excavation of the site revealed a late medieval ditch. Around 20 of the coins were found in the ditch fill, the rest in the topsoil.
Fieldwalking found no evidence of settlement in the vicinity. Material recovered included prehistoric worked flints and Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds.

1997. Metal detecting find.
Roman large Colchester one-piece brooch, rather crudely made, with grooved decoration down bow. One wing missing, other has matching grooved lines. Catchplate, forward-facing hook and stub of pin survive. 1st century AD. POL NCM.
