Summary

These two buildings may have been built in the 17th century but the construction details in the roof suggests they may be even older. The fronts of the building were plastered in the 19th century. A medieval rammed chalk and clay foundation for an older building was found when the inglenook fireplace was exposed in No. 4.

Map

Ave Maria and St Michaels, 3 and 4 Market Place (or Friday Market Place).
Originally one house. Timber framed with jetty to north. Offcentre stack with small windows on each of two storeys beside it. Rear wings to south. All visible exterior otherwise concealed by 19th century plastering; windows replaced. Listed grade II (S1) as 17th century but [1] reports crownpost roof suggesting much earlier.
E. Rose (NAU), 9 October 1989.

In fact the rear wing is probably a separate house and is now part of NHER 25481. No. 3 has later coving over the bressumer of the jetty, and coved eaves. Its rear wall, visible from the back yard of No. 1, has studwork at the east end at first floor level at least (rest concealed by outshuts).
E. Rose (NAU), 8 June 2000.
