Summary

Observation of this area during road construction in 1989 recovered a number of objects including pottery sherds, animal remains, brick and metal working debris from the medieval period, as well as evidence of possible post medieval occupation. Observation of construction work on part of this site in 1996 in this area recovered no further evidence. A watching brief maintained during the construction of three new dwellings in 2021 had similarly negative results.

1996. Plot of land between 22 and 24 Common Road built upon. Spoil detected and foundation trenches watched. No features seen and only modern finds recovered. Much rubble seen in trenches, plus soil dumped probably from the adjacent bypass.

August 2021. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of three new residential dwellings.
The various foundation trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
Undisturbed subsoil deposits were present in all three plots.
No finds recovered.
