Map

1989. Stray Find.
Installation of new storm water relief system. Various objects recovered from upper level of vertical shaft excavated in forecourt of business on Blackfriars Road (between Paston Terrace and Coburg Street). The unstratified finds retrieved included medieval pottery sherds, tiles, an iron nail, a possible leather shoe and animal remains (including jaw bones and horn cores). It was noted that although only a small number of horn cores were retained, 'literally hundreds' had been present in the spoil. The shaft was excavated close to the old cattle market so it is possible that these cores were from a nearby abattoir or butchery.
In additional to the above material the excavated spoil also contained shells (oyster, mussel, whelk, cockle) and wood fragments (including some large rotten timbers and pieces that were obviously the remains of posts).
See list and additional notes in file.
