Summary

This mid-19th-century building has a 16th-century rear wing that was considerably altered in the 18th century. The 19th-century building was designed by Phipson and the front façade has three storeys and a parapet and sash windows. The rear wing has a wood mullioned window. Inside are two oak chimney pieces dated to 1598 and some reused early 17th-century panelling.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Bank. Mid 19th century, on the site of a 16th-century house. By RM Phipson. For Lacon, Youell & Co, bankers. Early 20th-century stone ground-floor banking facade. To rear are 18th-century ranges. Gault brick with a slate roof. EXTERIOR: Three storeys; seven-window range...Chevron and corbel eaves cornice below parapet. Gabled roof with internal gable-end stacks north and south. Late 18th-century two-storey rear wing under a slate Mansard roof...To north is a cross-wing dated 1784 and initials U over PE.
INTERIOR: 20th century in character. Oak chimney-piece in banking hall dated 1598. A pair of fluted Ionic pilasters support a frieze with three Green Men and a foliate trail. Above are three panels...Right and left are female caryatid figures standing on grotesque heads. Plain upper frieze has two diamond studs and the date 1598. Modillion cornice. Second oak chimney-piece in first-floor front room to north. Dated 1598 and with initials RWA. Pair of reeded and fluted Ionic pilasters support a lower frieze of foliate scrolls and putti figures..."

Stephen Earl (Great Yarmouth Borough Council), states that the rear part of the building contains stopped and chamfered beams and is probably basically part of the original house on the site.
