Summary

Metal detecting recovered an unusual 9th century strap end, part of a medieval strap end fastener and a 12th century swivel ring from a dog leash.

1991. Metal detecting finds.
At [1].
Medieval bronze hinged part of strap end fastener (?sword belt etc) with two projecting pierced lugs for attachment of strap end. Decorated with punched dots and central pierced hole. Animal head projecting at base has transverse hole for hook of corresponding plate. Like (S1).

Middle Saxon or Late Saxon (ninth century) bronze strap end. Unusual. Animal- head terminal with ears forming spirals. Split end in U-shaped field below; rest of field is composed of an elongated quatrefoil, the spaces between the 'petals' forming roughly rectangular panels, cross hatched for silver and niello inlay. One inlaid silver 'lobe' remians in one 'petal'.

12th century bronze swivel ring, one of a pair used for a dog's leash. Moulded animal heads on shoulders.
