Summary

This shop and printing works date to the late 19th century but have a 15th century undercroft. The buildings are made from red brick and have plain tile roofs. A 20th century shop front exists to the left and the roof has a heavy box cornice. The brick undercroft beneath No 48 has pointed barrel-vaulting and runs parallel to and on the street line.

Listing Description:
Shop and printing works. Late 19th century with 15th-century undercroft. Shop and printing works: red brick ground stucco and roughcast first floor. Plain tile roof, two storeys. Three bays plus carriage entry. 20th century shop front to left. Four-light mullion and transom windows at first floor and 'Elizabethan' stucco decoration. Heavy box cornice. Four dormers. Undercroft beneath No.48. Undercroft: brick. Pointed barrel-vault. Section with apex parallel to road. Large side-chamber with chamfered brick and extending beneath pavement. Smaller chamber on north wall. 20th century east wall.
The building is grade II listed because of the undercroft, one of an important group within the city walls.

This undercroft is amongst those listed in thesis (S2), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as having a pointed barrel-vault with side chambers front and back. It is parallel to, and on the street line.
