Summary

Formerly a house, No 20 is now in use as an office. The building dates to the early 17th century, and is constructed in a block parallel to, and away from, the street-line. It was heightened and extended towards the street in the 18th century, and bears the date 1743 on the rainwater head. The building itself is of red brick with flint on the rear, stone quoins on the eastern walls, and pantile roofs. Inside are a finely carved staircase, door and fireplace surrounds, and a 17th century stair turret to the rear of the southern block.

Listing Description:
No 20 Colegate.
Former house, now office. Early 17th century, block parallel to and away from street-line, heightened and extended towards the street in the 18th century. 1743 on rainwater head. Red brick with flint on rear and east walls with stone quoins. Pantile roofs. L-shape plan. East facade: two storeys. Five bays with brick corinthian pilasters. Stone doorcase to right side with attached Tuscan columns, triglyph frieze and pediment. Sash windows throughout with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. North facade: two storeys. Two bays with pilasters. Sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches parapet. Interior: finely carved staircase, door and fireplace surrounds. Strapwork plaster ceiling in north ground floor room. 17th century stair turret to rear of south block.
