This building is amongst those listed in thesis (S2), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as a two-storey, early 16th-century building that originally extended along the streetline to include No 47 (NHER 26178). It is timber-framed at first floor and has a full-height flint rubble rear wall. The façade of No 49 was heightened slightly when it was refaced and there is evidence for 16th-century windows at first floor level. No 49 has a basic crown-post roof.
A long, 17th-century, two-storey extension with flint walls lies at right angles to the street range. Despite later alterations the off-centre gable-end stack may be original. There is also a long, 17th-century frieze window at first floor level in the east wall.
There are extensive 18th-century cellars beneath the whole block.
