Nos 5 and 6 St Gregory's Alley are amongst the buildings listed in thesis (S4), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century architecture of Norwich. They are described as a 16th-century building with timber-framed walls front and back at first floor level. It is noted that the ground floor rear walls have been removed and that the block is divided into two properties with a stack on the shared wall - an arrangement that could reflect the original room layout. The second floor was added in the 18th century.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 17 March 2021.

March 2010. Listing Amended.
For a time the grade of these buildings was upgraded to Grade II*. It is stated that this was done due to the presence beneath the building of a "…brick-built 15th-century undercroft…which forms part of an important collectection of undercrofts within the city walls". This was though an error as the undercroft is actually beneath the adjacent building, 6a and 7 St Gregory's Alley (NHER 54787). 6a and 7 were listed for the first time in December 2009, primarily due to the presence of the undercroft. The grade of Nos 4, 5 and 6 was reduced to Grade II in March 2010 and a new Listing Description produced.
See (S2) for further details.
