Full Description
September 1987. Listed, Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Pair of shops. 19th century. No 14 has a 17th-century rear addition and 16th-century cellar. Red brick and pantile roof; the two-storeyed rear extension has a rendered, timber-framed first floor and a pantiled lean-to roof. The principal façade is three storeys and five bays. 20th century shop fronts…
The cellar comprises two four-centred side chambers, the eastern chamber is broken at the apex. One deep wall arch in the west wall. Another four-centred side chamber and adjoining entry exists in the south wall, both blocked. All the vaults are constructed of brick and the joisted ceiling was replaced in the 20th century.
The building is listed because of the cellar beneath No. 14 which forms part of an important collection of 15th and 16th cellars within the city walls."
P. Watkins (HES), 16 March 2021.
The undercroft is amongst those listed in thesis (S2), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. Three side chambers survive, each with a pointed barrel vault profile. There is a blocked doorway adjacent to the blocked chamber in the wall away from the street. In the west wall there is a deep wall arch, possibly representing a partly blocked, fourth side chamber. The cellar is positioned on the street line. The side chambers are associated with a 15th-century cellar.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 16 March 2021.
