Full Description
Late 17th century building ranged along the street with a rear wing to the north that is slightly later in date, and a 19th century wing to the south.
The street range is three storeys high with the ground and first floors constructed of flint rubble and brick. The top floor is timber framed with multi-gables to the street, plus short sections of pitched roof adjacent to each gable. The top floor was constructed in this way, and the two sections of pitched roof do not represent the remains of a two-storyed building.
The northern rear wing may have been originally constructed the same as the street range, although the top floor has been rebuilt in brick in the 19th century.
Between the north gable stack and the front wall there is a section of tie-beam with an arched brace, and a small section of wattle and daub.
The generally piece-meal alterations to both number 25 and number 27 make it difficult to ascertain the relevance of this fragment, or even to which building it originally belonged.
Beyond the 19th century rear wing of number 23 there is a small, late 17th century building ranged parallel to the street. It is two storeys high plus cellar and constructed in brick although it was partly rebuilt in the 18th century and again in 1989.
The cellar is particularly interesting as it has seven, relatively large lighting niches and the remains of a fireplace.
These features, plus a loading shute that is now blocked, suggest an industrial use.
