T.E. Miller (NLA) 16 June 2004.
Two storeyed plus cellar and attic, corner site building that dates from the 17th century. Timber framed at first floor with full-height masonry rear walls. The roof is constructed with butt-purlins and independent tie-beams, and there is one dormer facing onto Bedford Street. The structure of the roof suggests that there was a chimney stack on the west gable. The eastern, rear wall (parallel to Swan Lane) is constructed in unknapped flint with a large, 16th century, four-centred brick arch that is built into an even earlier opening that formerly had splayed sides. The bricks that form both the arch and the hood have double hollow chambers. This section of wall probably represents the west gable of a building that was set back from Swan Lane and Bedford Street. A change in the vertical alignment of the northwest corner, suggests that the building was jettied on the façade facing Bedford Street. Only this gable remains.
Information from (S4) (in which this building is incorrectly listed as No 14 Beford Street).
