Summary

The majority of the present Ber House, now in use as offices, dates to the late 18th to early 19th centuries. However, a short stretch of 16th- to 17th-century first floor rear wall timber framing remains, completely isolated within this large building. Apart from this older section, this three storey building is of red brick and has a hipped roof of black pantiles.

2022. Enhancement [1].
Documentary evidence (S4) indicates that there was a medieval house known as Blaks-hall at this location at least since the 14th century (see NHER 6 for further details). A wall containing Saxon urns was uncovered in 1843 (S5) which may relate to either the former medieval home or other structures on the site pre-dating the current 18th-century building. It is uncertain how the 16th- to 17th-century timber framing within this building may relate to the wall uncovered in 1843.
