Summary

A much altered L-shaped block of 17th-century date, now split into two units. The two-storey street ranges date predominantly to the 19th-century, with only the flint rubble rear wall suggesting an earlier date. The two-storey rear range was also substantially modified in the 19th century but the ceiling beams and roof are indicative of a 17th-century date.

19-21 Magdalen Street are amongst the buildings briefly described in thesis (S3), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is noted that only the flint rubble rear wall suggests that the street range pre-dates the 19th century. The plan of the rear range dates from the 19th century (when the block was refaced in brick), but the ceiling beams and the roof structure are indicative of a 17th-century date.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 October 2017.
