March 1989. Trial Trenching.
Two small trial pits 1 and 2 dug by mechanical excavator.
1. 4.3m deep - marshy deposits at base. Organic preservation. Grimston Ware sherd from base. Water at bottom. 3m or more of black deposits.
2. 1.7 x 2m, 1.5m to concrete slab. Excavation ceased here. Modern brick and modern deposits of dark silty clay and rubble. Concrete slab already removed to begin excavation.
