Full Description
Soldier's Institute, Lollards Pit.
Red brick building with pantiled roof and internal gable stacks, but roof clearly altered. Originally of three bays of sash windows to south, double doorway approached by steps between centre bays; apparent basement without windows. Ornamental clamp irons, and plaque with name of Major-General Harvey and date in early 19th century (details need to be checked). Later window inserted on ground floor between left and centre bays; on photograph in file the letters 'SO… RS H...E' can be seen in paint or black brick to either side of this window suggesting 'Soldiers House' or 'Soldiers Home'. On map of 1883 (S1) this building is marked as 'Soldiers Institute'. According to D. Jones (Bridwell Museum) this is a rare and important survival of an early 19th century institution.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 3 February 1992.
See photograph (S2) in file.
T. Sunley (NLA) 30 October 2007.
