Full Description
On site of 18th century theatre, present building stated in (S1) to have 1930s Art Deco features.
December 1991. Architectural Survey and Excavation.
Recording by NAU of wall at south-west angle of building before demolition.
Judged to be a boundary wall, perhaps of Dissolution date, and containing a number of limestone carvings including tracery and a bishop's head stop.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S8).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.186).
NB. The wall is exactly at the location where 50in Ordnance Survey marks 'site of chapel (antiquity)'. Is this a coincidence for an inaccurate locating of the Chapel-in-the-Field?
E. Rose (NLA) 19 March and 21 July 1992. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2022.
December 2005.
Plans for redevelopment of this building reported in (S3).
A. Cattermole (NLA) 22 August 2006.
See other press cuttings (S4), (S5), (S6) and (S7) in file.
T. Sunley (NLA) 30 October 2007.
