Summary

During archaeological evaluations here in 1992 three trenches were dug at the rear of the property. These uncovered pits, hearths and post holes that showed the area was on the fringe of the urban area until the 12th/13th century. Medieval and post medieval debris was found in the pits as well as a prehistoric flint implement and an Iron Age or Middle Saxon pottery sherd. The monitoring of limited groundworks on the site in 2011 identified a medieval or post-medieval ditch that may have marked a property boundary and several features that were probably pits.

June-August 2011. Watching Brief
Monitoring of minor groundworks including footing trenches and tree holes. Natural sand deposits were encountered in most of the groundworks, overlain by a deposit interpreted as an old garden soil. This layer was sealed by imported soils and spreads of rubble. Archaeologically significant features were identified within three of the tree holes and one of the foundation trenches. Iit is probable that features were also present below two additional holes where natural deposits were not exposed. A ditch aligned perpendicular to Surrey Street was tentatively interpreted as a medieval plot boundary, although it produced no dating evidence. A large feature partially exposed in another tree hole contained moderate amounts of oyster shell and was probably a medieval or post-medieval refuse pit. A second pit was thought to be a more recent feature, possibly a tree hole. Finds recovered from unstratified deposits included a small number of medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and fragments of post-medieval ceramic building material.
See report (S4) for further information.
