Summary

A brick vaulted undercroft on rubble walls. It was probably the annexe to an unvaulted cellar, now destroyed. Oldest part is early 16th century; in about 1600, one half of the four-centred vault was removed and another arch inserted. In the early 19th century a stairwell was added. The feature is situated half under numbers 7 and 9, a mid 20th century house, and half under number 5, demolished in 1992 and now redeveloped.

March 1992. Field Observation.
Foundation trenches were observed, following the demolition of number 5, prior to rebuilding on the same site (no context sheets).
All was made-up ground except along the front (east) line of the existing standing buildings where the footings/lower part of the rear wall of an earlier building was revealed. (The existing line of the buildings is set back from the street frontage; compare with that of Pykerell's House to the north). This was brick (post medieval) with a semi-circular, banded brick buttress* on the outside (east). Depth of footings/wall not ascertained, but at least 0.3m below existing surface.
* 17th century stair turret footing (Robert Smith, personal communication).
No report produced.
