NHER 26489 (Monument record) - Site of Old Thurstons Wintergrounds building, near Kett's Heights

East end of Egyptian Road, south of Ketts Hill.
Large, iron-framed building clad in corrugated iron, apparently a Bolton and Paul product of a type once common, now rare. In mid 20th century used as winter quarters for Thurston's Travelling Fair, then as seed merchants. Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society (NIAS) survey 1991 (on fiche) dates it to around 1890, and suggests it was brought from elsewhere. Norwich City Council say they wre told it came from Lowestoft, part of a larger building burnt down, as late as 1938. However 1883 map (S1) shows a building apparently on same alignment and position, though it is hard to be exact as area has changed. Permission granted for demolition around 1990 but never taken up due to fear of subsidence.
