Summary

This area contains two buildings of the Maids Head Hotel complex. The most northerly part clearly predates the southerly section, and excavation in the interiors of both buildings indicates they were built in the 15th to 16th centuries. The more northerly building may have begun life as a merchant's hall, but by the 17th to 18th centuries there is evidence for smithing taking place in its interior. The southerly building remained a warehouse until the 19th century, when both the Provender Mill and the last occupiers Allen and Page Ltd produced corn and animal feed here.

Map

Block of three buildings in angle of Quayside and Pigg Lane, set back from each.
One is a timber framed building of possibly 15th or 16th century date possibly a first floor hall or warehouse.
The second, No 5 Quayside, is an 18th century brick house reorganised in the 19th century as a lodging house and retaining its laundry, which is a rare survival.
The third is a brick and flint building of around 1680, retaining a remarkable quantity of original decorated beams considering its later industrial use.
See (S1) for a summary of the architectural significance of these buildings.

August 2000-April 2001. Building Survey and Excavation. Contexts 1-224.
Recording of the structures designated Buildings 4 and 6 by (S2), prior to their demolition. Excavations were also undertaken following the demolition of these structures.
The building recording has shown that Building 4 (to the north) clearly predates 6; there is no southern gable end to building 4 since Building 6 truncated the end of 4. The excavations of the interior of both buildings have indicated a late medieval date (15th to 16th centuries) for their construction. Building 4 may have begun as a merchant hall. Its function changed when building 6 was attached to form an adjoining warehouse, replacing a yard. In the 17th to 18th centuries excavation evidence suggests that smithing may have been undertaken in Building 4. No evidence was found in Building 6 of any industrial structures suggesting that the building remained purely a warehouse, until the 19th century when both the Provender Mill and the last occupiers Allen and Page Ltd, produced corn and animal feed.
Excavation revealed evidence of 17th and 18th century smithing.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
