NHER 26500 (Monument record) - Multi-period finds and features, 14 Calvert Street

An excavation was carried out in advance of development in 1998. The work revealed that human activity in the area began in the 11th century with the digging of quarry and refuse pits. Large quantities of slag indicated nearby metalworking activity. By the mid 13th century a series of yards behind properties which probably fronted Calvert Street had developed. These yards had become gardens by 16th century. Evidence for early post medieval clothing manufacture supports the theory that immigrant Flemish weavers settled in the locality after the mid 16th century. During the 18th century, brick buildings were erected within the gardens, and these survived until the 20th century, when post-war redevelopment of the area commenced.
