Full Description
CROPMARKS PREVIOUSLY RECORDED UNDER THIS NUMBER ARE NOW RECORDED AS NHER 59925.
November 1991. Fieldwalking.
2 undatable iron nails, 4 slag fragments, 1 bronze disc, 1 oyster shell and 10 animal bones.
3 prehistoric worked flint of unspecified type and 4 flakes,
1 Mesolithic flint blade. Identified as Mesolithic in (S1).
323 Roman pottery sherds, including Samian, oxidised, greyware, reduced ware, shelly, Nar Valley, mortaria and Nene Valley Colour-coated sherds. A significant proportion is 3rd-4th century.
1 Middle Saxon pottery sherd (sandy Ipswich Ware rim).
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd.
25 medieval sherds, 2 copper alloy vessel rim.
15 post-medieval sherds, 1 copper alloy perforated strip and 1 glass fragment.
1 undatable wheelmade pottery sherd.
The scatter of Roman pottery appears to have been concentrated in the centre of this area. The quantity of sherds recovered indicates that some form of Roman settlement foci was present at this location.
