Full Description
December 1991. Metal detecting finds.
Medieval copper alloy strap end, front plate, with cast stylised animal-head terminal; decorated with rocker-arm ornament.
Medieval circular silver belt-boss, scalloped edge, circle of cast annulets within plain bands and central pierced hole; 3 shanks with circular roves on reverse.
Medieval 15th century silver openwork strap end, identical back and front. Ridged outer frame, tongue-shaped. Within this are 4 layers. Two outermost, made of strips of silver, have (on each side) a pelta (at the top) and a circle below. The pelta contains one circle, and has 2 rivets in the spiral ends. The circular frame below contains 3 smaller circles. Within these openwork front and back plates are two very thin sheets which are punched with 4 holes within the small circles, and cut to open trefoils between the circles. Similar techniques used on buckle-plates.
S. Margeson (NCM) 15 January 1992.
