Full Description
Artificial water course dug in 1425 to bring fresh water into Lynn.
New cut supposed to have started at Gaywood Bridge, so altered course to east of this marked on (S1) by R.R. Clarke (NCM) must be a more recent straightening. Western end diverted at time of Civil War to form a defensive moat (see NHER 5486). Near Beulah Road a brick tunnel passes under the river with its top visible; this appears to carry the Black Drain (rather than the Bawsey Drain as stated on one source in file) and the brickwork appears to be 18th/19th century. Details of the exact inter-relationship of drains and river, and dating of former, obscure.
See notes by source, press cuttings and maps in file.
