Summary

The Green Hill is recorded in 1619 as being the site of ruins. These have been interpreted as ruins of the Saxon church of St Benet that predated St Nicholas' (NHER 4329) or a medieval chapel built by men of Cinque Ports between 1146 and 1154 when they failed to take control of the parish church from Bishop Herbert. Most of the ruins were removed in 1732 to make the Causeway to Caister. The hill was later removed during construction of the bus depot.

Map

The Green Hill. Site of chapel or church.
Recorded in 1619 by Henry Manship as about half a mile north of parish church, ruins remaining. Suggested in past as Late Saxon church of St Benet, predecessor of parish church, but more probably chapel built by men of Cinque Ports 1146 to 1154 when they failed to take control of the parish church from Bishop Herbert. In 1732 John Andrews noted that the ruins had been removed to make the Causeway to Caister but a wall remained. Site located from 18th century map by Swinden rediscovered in 1990. Area later used for bus depot which removed the hill. 'Much pottery and building material' noted to west of site in river bank but this may be recent due to location of refuse compactor here.

Notes on St Benedicts in file.

The bus garage on the site, of ref brick and decorated with reliefs of a railway engine, a horse bus and a 1930s bus, is in itself an important building.
