Summary

A watching brief at this site before the construction of the Yelverton to East Carleton gas pipeline recovered Roman, medieval and post medieval fragments of pottery, Roman brick or tile, medieval glass, four prehistoric flint flakes, an undated lava quern fragment and some smelting slag.

May-August 1992. Fieldwalking and Metal-Detecting Survey and Watching Brief.
Fieldwork carried out along route of Yelverton to East Carleton Gas Pipeline (Survey Blocks 171-175).
Finds recovered during initial survey include:
4 prehistoric flint flakes.
3 Roman pottery sherds and 3 brick/tile fragments.
2 medieval pottery sherds and glass.
10 post-medieval pottery sherds and 52 brick/tile fragments.
1 undatable lava quern fragment and smelting slag.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits identified during subsequent Watching Brief undertaken during topsoil stripping and excavation of pipe trench.

There are also minor discrepancies between the information given in (S1) and that which was initially supplied following the completion of the fieldwork.
The finds have been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1995.75).
