Summary

An NAU watching brief undertaken during the excavation of a gravel pit recovered human skeletal remains. A range of finds were also found on the spoil heaps, including undatable prehistoric, Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age worked flints; Beaker and Iron Age pottery sherds; an undatable horn core and a post-medieval bead/toggle.

Watching Brief undertaken by Norfolk Archaeological Research Group during excavation of extraction pit for Norwich Southern Bypass.

Human remains including a lower jaw, fragments of cranium, vertebrae and ribs. These were found in the corner of the pit closest to the River Yare, retrieved from below the peat horizon, lying in a thin deposit of alluvial sands.
Along the edge of the pit parallel to the river was densely packed wood (branches and twigs) lying horizontally.

Finds from peaty spoil heaps included:
12 undatable prehistoric flint flakes and shatter pieces.
1 Palaeolithic flint flake.
1 ?Palaeolithic handaxe. See drawing (S1).
5 ?Palaeolithic flakes and 1 blade.
1 Neolithic flake.
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint dagger and ?associated Beaker pottery sherds.
1 Iron Age pottery sherd (large base).
1 post-medieval bead/toggle.
1 undatable polished horn core with chop marks at base.

Flints identified by P. Robins (NCM). These discoveries were reported in (S2) and the Palaeolithic finds are also noted on (S3).
The flint dagger was subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1997.572); see copy of drawing in file.
