Full Description
January 1993. Metal detecting find.
Middle Saxon silver strap end fragment; animal head terminal and part of body decorated with niello inlay. Inlaid glass eyes, finely-modelled muzzle and brow, niello inlaid on the muzzle and above the eyes. Above the eyes is a stem with three leaves and a 'square' all speckled in Trewhiddle-style manner. Circular ears with a cross in each, also speckled. Above the ears elaborate leaf ornament in silver (speckled) with niello inlay. Niello probably once in the ears around the crosses too.
