Summary

Metal detecting on this site has recovered Roman and medieval metal finds including a Roman cosmetic pestle, a Norse bell of the 10th century, and a medieval lead seal matrix inscribed +SIGILLVM: PETRI: CAPELLANI: ('the seal of Peter Chaplain') with a stylised fleur-de-lis decoration.

Medieval coin, see list in file.
Medieval bronze strap end buckle, integral plate broken off, gilded. Pin with two incised transverse grooves.
Medieval bronze harness pendant with open quatrafoil in centre. Suspension loop.
Medieval ring brooch with scalloped edges and narrow bar for pin (missing). Six bosses each containing white paste. Between each pair (except at narrowing) a circular or oval field with a five pointed star on a dotted ground.
Roman bronze bell. Cone-shaped, six facets (two partly missing). Each facet decorated with eight ring-and-dot motifs. Traces of upper end of iron clapper. See (S1), and see entry below.

January-February 2000. Metal detecting.
Roman fragment of small cosmetic pestle. Round in section with flatish handle. Old breaks.
Medieval lead seal matrix, flat with a projecting unpierced lug at the top. Pointed oval in shape, it measures 66 x 31 mm overall, and c.57 mm long discounting the projection. The central motif is a stylised fleur-de-lis with a very long central leaf running right up to the legend; either side of this leaf is a dot with a fine line linking it to the centre of the lis. The legend reads +SIGILLVM: PETRI: CAPELLANI: (Seal of Peter Chaplain). At the end of the legend is a curious space filling shape which looks a little like half a leaf. 13th century. See (S1). CAST.
