NHER 29497 (Monument record) - Site of possible medieval settlement and multi-period pottery sherds

Earthworks of square enclosures in grassland, seen on vertical air photographs taken in NCC/BKS survey of Norfolk, 1988.
Possibly remains of house platforms, making Burgh-next-Aylsham a shrunken village.

Ploughed out enclosure earthwork, still some evidence of depression surrounding one rectangular enclosure. General pottery scatter.

One Ipswich pimply base, Middle Saxon.

One Ipswich sandy rim, Middle Saxon.
Three Thetford type: one body, one jar rim, one flat base, Late Saxon.

One Grimston glazed, medieval.
One Paffrath? (overfired) body, medieval.
Seven various Late medieval/Transitional, medieval.

Field under pasture, grass long and unkempt, making identification difficult, though some variation in levels. Local residents remember fairly substantial earthworks many years ago.

January 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
An earthwork boundary ditch, of a probable medieval to post medieval date, is seen on aerial photographs (S1). The ditch is subsequently levelled and seen as a cropmark on recent (2017) aerial photographs (S2). The boundary ditch may relate to the suggested area of medieval settlement. The above enclosure (see above) was not seen on the aerial photographs consulted as part of this project. It is unclear as to whether the boundary ditch mapped as part of this project relates to the above enclosure or is a separate feature. It is also possible that the feature may relate to post medieval drainage. The feature is not recorded on the readily available historic maps such as S3. Further possible medieval to post medieval boundary ditches (NHER 64316) are recorded to the north west. The monument polygon has been updated to the extent of the features as seen on S1-S2
