22 February 1993.
Observation of four pits, average size 2m by 1.5m, in the Market Place, mechanically excavated, with vertical sides. Other pits already dug and backfilled with concrete. All showed evidence of complex but horizontal stratigraphy with wind blown sand layers.
One hole at TG 52419 07686 very rapidly examined. Below concrete, 0 to 20cm, dark soil 20 to 85cm; wind blown sand 85 to 105cm; 105 to185, finely laminated brown clay, dark soil, olive soil layers, with burnt red flecks and charcoal; 185cm and below, wind blown sand.
From 160 to 185cm, four sherds: one base and one base sherd medieval unglazed, two base sherds medieval glazed, similar to Mellors Yarmouth fabric 19.
