Summary

A curving bank and ditch and an enclosure are visible as earthwork on the ground and on aerial photographs. The exact date and function of the earthworks is unknown, and they have been interpreted as possible medieval village earthworks, as a post medieval building, and as modern settlement tanks for the nearby sewage works.

Location

Map sheet TG13NE
Civil Parish MATLASK, NORTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

Hollow way and possible village earthworks visible on vertical air photograph taken as part of NCC/BKS survey of Norfolk, 1988.
Site located during NLA/RCHM earthwork survey, January 1993.
M. Flitcroft (NLA) March 1993.

January 1993.
Gently curving bank and ditch (0.3m deep) with some old trees on bank, joins at west end a modern trackway. To the north on land sloping to valley floor a 0.4m high curving bank/causeway (4m spread) with to the east a near rectangular banked (0.3m high) enclosure, approximately 30m x 20m. Bank may be coincident with old parish boundary.
Possible old building or yard outline, but no masonry evident. Size suggests settlement tanks for nearby sewage works (wartime) but this unlikely as no map evidence or air photograph evidence and too irregular as earthworks.
B. Cushion (NLA) February 1993.
