Summary

The Chantry is an early 17th century half H-shaped timber framed house which was remodelled in the late 17th century and extended to the rear in the early 19th century. It currently has a rendered and colourwashed brick façade over the timber-frame and gault brick to the rear. The 19th century façade is in 7 bays. The interior retains a late 17th century open-string staircase and early 17th century small-frame panelling in the ground floor rear room. Much of the main timber frame has been removed, and by 1993 the entire building was in very poor condition. However, between 1994 and 1997 it was restored and coverted to three flats.

22 April 1993. Building Survey.
A 17th century timber framed half H-shaped house, consisting of the main block with cellars and the southern wing, though the north end may be a later remodelling. The current façade is Georgian, there is an excellent staircase in the rear outshut, and two brick rear wings were added at one or more dates in the 18th or early 19th century. The small rear room which features 17th century panelling is likely part of the 18th or 19th century additions which has re-used the panelling.

1993-1994.
By 1993, the Chantry had become derelict and was under consideration for demolition. However, following extended discussion the building was untimately sold and is to be converted into three flats.

20 February 1997. Building Survey.
The central and northern section of the building was inspected again following conversion into three dwellings. On the ground floor the ceiling joists have been concealed and several partitions have been inserted. The staircase has been painted, and the original floral painting has been concealed and likely lost. The cellar openings in the central section have been filled with breeze blocks and it is assumed that a new staircase to the cellar was inserted in the southern section which was not seen. A stone block carved with roll moulding or a colonette fragment is visible at the foot of the stairs to the first floor. On the first floor, partitions have been altered and the small stack located towards the south end has been removed except for the corbel in the ground floor ceiling. The old floorboards have been left in place beneath the present floor. The attic stairs have been moved and a re-used 15th century castellated wallplate has been identified within the attic. The current owner has reported finds from the garden which have been identified as one sherd of 14th century green glazed ware and several 17th century sherds.
See (S4) for further details.
