Map

1993. Found on roadside of lane known as Madmeregate (called South Creake by finder).
Flint object. Tapering and of diamond section, 100mm x 350mm x 50mm across 'blade'. At first appears to be simply a starch fracture, but the 'blade' end clearly has a concoidal fracture on one side and a hinge fracture on the other, and there is some retouching. ?A starch fracture reused as a chisel? prehistoric.
Identified by E. Rose (NLA), April 1993.
E. Rose (NLA), 11 May 1993.

Informant notes that this road is Paxwell Way in 1600, whereas Madmergate is the road running parallel on the other side of Holgate. One presumes it is more probable that the findspot is correct and the name wrong, rather than vice versa?
E. Rose (NLA), 25 July 1996.
