Summary

Two near parallel earthwork ditches to the south of South Creake Abbey (NHER 1953), visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data and subject to a detailed earthwork survey, are probably drainage ditches of medieval to post medieval date. They form part of a wider system of drainage features visible to the north and south of the abbey buildings (recorded as part of NHER 1953). The features are clearly visible on aerial imagery from 2020, and it is likely that the earthworks still survive.

M. Flitcroft (NLA), 28 January 1993.

March 2000. Earthwork survey at 1:10000 and report in file for NHER 1953.
Recording earthworks to northwest and south of the remains of the abbey and farm buildings. The church and surviving claustral was also surveyed. No convincing earthwork features of medieval date were noted in the gardens of the house. The large pond is 19th century, the western one may be for farm use the eastern one now ornamental.
See report (S1) for further details and plan (filed under NHER 1953).
B. Cushion, April 2000.

December 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The suggested enclosures or medieval fishponds described above are more likely to be drainage ditches of medieval to post medieval date, which are clearly visible on visualised lidar data (S2). They appear to fit with the wider network of drainage features across the broader abbey site, recorded as part of NHER 1953, rather than being something more distinctive. See too the published earthwork survey of the site in Cushion and Davison 2003 (S3). The features are clearly visible on aerial imagery from 2020 (S4), and it is likely that the earthworks still survive.
