Summary

It is recorded that two potentially prehistoric ring-ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of this location. It was however subsequently noted that they were not particularly convincing as archaeological features and a geophysical survey of part of this site in 2010 revealed no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains. It should though be noted that a geophysical survey in the field to the east did identify two probable ring-ditches (see NHER 55760) - so it is possibly that it was these that were observed and then inaccurately located.

Civil Parish ATTLEBOROUGH, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

15 June 1989. NAU aerial photography.
Two ring ditches.
D. Edwards (NAU).

July 1993.
These two features, side by side and of equal dimensions, seem most odd and look somewhat more like 'crop circles' than Bronze Age ring ditches. However, the RAF air photograph of 1946 shows a very faint dark ring on the site of the eastern of the two.
E. Rose (NLA) and A. Rogerson (NLA) 5 July 1993.

March 2010. Geophysical survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 12).
The survey of this area (which partially coincided with the recorded position of these cropmarks) revealed no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance. It was though noted that the speckled appearance of the data was characteristic of ground contaminated by building rubble or other magnetic hardcore. This is consistent with reports that much imported soil had been deposited on the field in recent years.
See report (S2) and NHER 55758 for further details.
It should be noted that a survey within the field to the east (Field 15; NHER 55760) did record two ring-ditches, approximately 250m to the east of this location. It is therefore possibly that it was these that were observed and then inaccurately located.
P. Watkins (HES), 28 February 2022.
