Map

Remains of ?bridge in Emms's Lane.
First noted by [1] who supplied (S1) in file.

Visited by E. Rose (NLA) 14 July 1993 when structure more overgrown.
In south bank of flowing dyke; no traces in north bank. Massive flint and cement (no brick) construction approx. 5m long and 1.5m from base of ditch to visible top; overhanging soil may conceal more. Overhangs ditch like fragment of an arch or bridge. Adjacent field access is simply a pipe with earth above, why was such a massive structure needed here? In field to south, not exactly in line, is old pit now cropped over. Set on high ground. To northeast is large flint and brick late 18th century building resembling a chapel with house attached (or perhaps school and house) shown on (S2) and (S3) but not named on either. (S2) shows either this bridge or the present field access as crossing dyke, impossible to tell which. Infested with small conical molluscs. Date and purpose is therefore a mystery but certainly pre 20th century.
E. Rose (NLA) 15 July 1993.
