Map

November 1993-April 1994. Watching Brief.
Observation of pipeline from Bryants Quay, Great Yarmouth to Caister Water Works.
In the event only the section from Bryant's Quay to Lancaster Road, Great Yarmouth produced archaeological material or was adequately observed.
Finds of medieval and post-medieval pottery and building material, also Roman sherds noted in text of report but not in finds catalogue.
Two occurrences of timbers perhaps from boats reused as revetments, one of which may be same as NHER 4312, and later quaysides, but boat previously noted as site NHER 4325 not found. A collapsed section of the Great Yarmouth town wall was also observed, in Lancaster Street found along with part of an external ditch.
Profiles of spit obtained. Section across town wall (see also NHER 4294).
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2)-(S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1995.79).
E. Rose (NLA), 7 December 1995. Amended by M. Langham-Lopez (HES), 8 July 2013 and P. Watkins (HES), 22 July 2019.

2015. Dendrochronological Survey.
Dendrochronology assessment of oak timbers from wooden revetment uncovered between 1993 and 1994.
Two samples were both found to contain significant numbers of tree rings, although one couldn’t be matched to reference data from Norfolk or elsewhere. The other did though match very strongly with data from Dublin and southeast Ireland, and to 13th-century boards from English contexts identified dendrochronologically as being from this region. It is suggested that the Great Yarmouth timber had probably been felled after AD 1275. If this was indeed a reused boat timber this vessel was not necessarily from Ireland as it is known that planking was being imported from Ireland (and elsewhere) at this time.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 August 2025.
